Yuri Abaev is the Minister of Labor and Social Development of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, appointed to this position on May 6, 2025. Previously, he served in the 42nd Motorized Rifle Division and by May 2024 commanded the 70th Motorized Rifle Regiment (military unit 71718) with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR MOU) reported that during the killing of four Ukrainian prisoners of war near Robotyne in the second half of May 2024, Abaev, with the call sign "Buyvol" (Buffalo), commanded the regiment.
In the same publication, the alleged direct participants in the execution are listed separately, therefore there is no basis to claim that Abaev personally participated in the killing. Two GUR publications differ on his birth date — December 10 or 11, 1990; the disputed date in the dossier is not changed.
Yuri Abaev, while serving as commander of the 70th Motorized Rifle Brigade (Military Unit 71718), bears command responsibility for the actions of his subordinate servicemen. According to the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, during his tenure in command of the regiment in the latter half of May 2024 near Rabotino, four Ukrainian prisoners of war were murdered. Although there is no direct evidence of Abaev's personal involvement in the execution, he is the commander of the unit implicated in the alleged war crime.
