On May 1, 2023, the Russian Minister of Defense prematurely awarded Aguev the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
His brother, Rustam Aguev, heads the Ministry of Internal Affairs department for the Kurchaloyevsky District of Chechnya, which was included in the US sanctions list in March 2022 for human rights violations; direct confirmation of Ismail Aguev's personal inclusion in official international sanctions lists has not been found upon verification.
