Key Takeaways
The 346th Separate Special Purpose Brigade, Military Unit 31681, is based in Prokhladny, Kabardino-Balkaria, and belongs to the military intelligence system of the General Staff of the Russian Federation.
OSINT groups documented the presence of servicemen from the 346th Brigade in Donbas long before the full-scale invasion of 2022. In 2015–2016, InformNapalm published photos, connections, and geolocation of servicemen it attributed to Military Unit 31681 in the Horlivka area and near the Russian-Ukrainian border.
The strongest indicator of losses emerged after the leak of secret American documents in 2023. The Washington Post, citing a US intelligence assessment, reported that out of 900 servicemen from the 346th Brigade deployed in Ukraine, only 125 remained active.
This does not mean 775 killed. The difference could include killed, wounded, missing, discharged for other reasons, and those whom intelligence considered inactive. The correct conclusion: according to US intelligence, the unit lost the overwhelming majority of its initially deployed active strength.
At the same time, in March 2023, the brigade was awarded the Guards title. Russia's symbolic status was elevated amidst reports of the deep degradation of one of its elite intelligence units.
What is the 346th Brigade
The 346th Separate Special Purpose Brigade is a unit of Russian military intelligence Spetsnaz. Its permanent deployment point is Prokhladny, Kabardino-Balkaria. Its conditional designation is Military Unit 31681.
The tasks of this type of Spetsnaz traditionally include deep reconnaissance, sabotage, target identification, small group operations, and special operations. This makes the history of the 346th Brigade in Ukraine particularly illustrative: training an experienced scout takes much longer than training a regular line infantry rifleman.
Donbas before 2022
As early as January 2015, InformNapalm wrote about an alleged combined reconnaissance and sabotage unit of the 346th Brigade in a field camp of the Rostov grouping. In 2016, the project published more detailed material, linking several reconnaissance snipers from 31681 to Horlivka via social media and geolocation.
These publications provide an important historical line: 31681 does not appear in the Ukrainian context only after February 2022. The unit belongs to those Russian units whose traces the OSINT community recorded in the conflict since the mid-2010s.
However, a methodological caveat is mandatory: InformNapalm is an independent volunteer OSINT project, not a court or an official Russian registry. Each personal attribution must be evaluated by the quality of the original photos, geolocation, and connections.
Elite Unit Used as Front-Line Infantry
In The Washington Post publication, based on leaked US intelligence documents, the reason for the heavy losses of Russian Spetsnaz was cited as the excessive use of specialized units alongside regular infantry on the front line.
From a military point of view, this is a systemic error. Spetsnaz provides maximum value where stealth, reconnaissance, precise targeting, and small groups are used. In protracted frontal combat, its unique training ceases to provide a proportional advantage, and losses of specialists are very difficult to replenish.
125 out of 900: What the Leak Actually Said
On April 14, 2023, The Washington Post published an assessment from secret materials: the 346th Brigade "lost almost the entire brigade," and only 125 servicemen out of 900 deployed remained active.
The Institute for the Study of War recounted this assessment on the same day and noted that such high losses of elite units lead to the erosion of their quality and the replacement of professional personnel with less trained mobilized individuals and volunteers.
There is also an independent named minimum. "Mediazona," jointly with the BBC Russian Service, by April 14, 2023, identified 438 killed Russian special forces servicemen; 38 of them definitely served in the 346th Brigade. Mariupol and Lysychansk were indicated as places of death for several. These 38 names do not fully confirm the intelligence assessment of 125 out of 900, but they show that it was not just an analytical model: some losses were confirmed by Russian obituaries and relatives' publications.
The most common mistake is to subtract 125 from 900 and claim 775 people were killed. The document does not assert this. The Washington Post explicitly wrote that the documents do not indicate how many special forces personnel were specifically killed or wounded.
The correct formula for a headline and infographic is: "out of 900 deployed, 125 remained active," with the mandatory note "US intelligence assessment from leaked document."
Why Spetsnaz Restoration Takes Years
The loss of a special unit is not just the disappearance of people from the staff list. Along with experienced fighters, instructors, group commanders, communications specialists, sappers, snipers, and people with experience in covert infiltration and observation are lost.
Therefore, even if 31681 is later brought back to hundreds of servicemen in terms of roster strength, this does not mean an automatic restoration of its previous combat value. The number of people and the quality of a trained team are different metrics.
Guards Title Amidst Losses
On March 27, 2023, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 206, the 346th Brigade was awarded the honorary title "Guards." The decree does not disclose losses or contain an assessment of combat effectiveness; its wording speaks of "mass heroism and valor." Chronologically, the award almost coincided with the period to which American assessments of huge personnel attrition referred.
For this investigation, the institutional contrast is important: a unit could have suffered losses that questioned its former combat effectiveness, and simultaneously received an increase in symbolic status.
What is Confirmed and What Cannot Be Exaggerated
Confirmed: the existence of Military Unit 31681, its specialization and deployment; InformNapalm publications about the presence of its servicemen in Donbas; The Washington Post publication based on leaked American intelligence documents; the wording about 125 active out of 900 deployed; the awarding of the Guards title in March 2023.
Cannot assert: that 775 servicemen died. This does not follow from the published intelligence assessment.
Requires further verification: the actual strength of the brigade after replenishment, the current commander, which units were restored, and what proportion of pre-war trained personnel remains.
Conclusion: It's Easier to Restore a Number Than a Specialization
"Mediazona"'s named list provides a lower bound: 38 identified killed from the 346th Brigade by April 2023. The US intelligence leak describes a much broader attrition rate: allegedly 125 out of 900 deployed remained active. These figures measure different things and should not be combined, but both indicate a sharp reduction in the personnel core.
The Russian state responded to this story not with a public analysis of Spetsnaz deployment, but by awarding a Guards designation. Staffing levels can be restored by recruiting new contract soldiers. Years of training for scouts, group commanders, signalmen, and sappers are not returned by a single order. This is precisely the failure of 31681: a specialized and expensive resource was used in such a way that it had to be assessed in terms of mass attrition typical of a regular front-line unit.
