On August 23, 2026, residents of Arkhangelsk Oblast filmed drones, heard air defense systems operating, and published photographs of a plume of smoke in the vicinity of the closed city of Mirny. Several reports immediately identified the military Plesetsk Cosmodrome as the target, with the smoke cited as proof of a hit. The first claim is refuted by an earlier statement from the head of Roscosmos, while the second is not confirmed by published materials. Below, we separate what is established from what is probable.

Open sources currently do not allow for selecting one of these options.

Published materials do not show discernible elements of a launch complex, a crater, or a damaged structure. Therefore, statements such as 'launch pads hit,' 'nuclear test facility destroyed,' or 'launch thwarted' are speculative. Even if the attack reached the territory, the cosmodrome's area is vast, and its facilities are distributed across several sites.

There is also a reverse logical fallacy: a successful launch does not prove the absence of all damage. It confirms the operational capability of the specific chain of preparation, launch position, control, and tracking involved on August 24. Localized damage to another facility, external line, or equipment is theoretically possible, but it still needs to be proven.

Why Plesetsk Remains a Strategic Target
