“General Armageddon”: Brutal Doctrine from Syria to Ukraine

General Sergei Surovikin earned the moniker "General Armageddon" during his command of Russian forces in Syria in 2017 and 2019, where he oversaw the indiscriminate bombardment of Aleppo, Idlib, and civilian hospital networks.

In October 2022, Vladimir Putin appointed Surovikin as the first unified commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, where he instituted the mass cruise missile and Shahed-136 drone strike campaigns against Ukrainian civilian energy infrastructure.

The Syrian Mining Concessions of Anna Surovikina

Investigative reporting by FBK and Dossier Center exposed the financial nexus between Surovikin and Kremlin-linked oligarch Gennady Timchenko. While Surovikin's troops recaptured Syrian phosphate mines from ISIS, Timchenko's company "Stroytransgaz" obtained exclusive extraction rights.

In return, a subsidiary of Stroytransgaz transferred over 104 million rubles in unsecured loans to "Timber Invest", a forestry and timber holding company owned directly by Surovikin's wife, Anna Surovikina.

The Wagner Alliance and Post-Mutiny Fall from Grace

Surovikin maintained a close tactical and personal alliance with PMC Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, acting as the primary mediator between Wagner assault detachments in Bakhmut and the Russian General Staff.

Following Prigozhin's armed rebellion in June 2023, US intelligence revealed Surovikin had advance knowledge of the mutiny. He was placed under secret house arrest by the FSB, stripped of his Aerospace Forces command, and subsequently sidelined to a non-combat military delegation role in Africa.
