The 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division at Engels airbase is a formation of Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers, which has repeatedly been the target of Ukrainian long-range strikes throughout the full-scale war: from the December 2022 strikes on bombers to large attacks on the base's fuel depots in 2025, with documented personnel losses and damaged equipment.

The 22nd Guards Donbas Heavy Bomber Aviation Division is based at the Engels airfield, where in 2009 it was reorganized into the 6950th Air Base (16 Tu-160 and 18 Tu-95MS); its successor today is the 121st Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment (Tu-160) and the 184th Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment (Tu-95MS). This airbase is a key target for Ukrainian long-range strikes against strategic aviation: on December 5, 2022, a Ukrainian strike damaged at least one Tu-95MS; on December 26, 2022, a series of explosions at the base resulted in the deaths of three technical personnel; on February 3, 2024, Tu-95 crew commander Oleg Stegachev was shot dead, with Ukrainian intelligence claiming responsibility; on March 19–20, 2025, a major strike on fuel depots and ammunition storage facilities resulted in the deaths of 2 and injuries to 3 people, the evacuation of about 120 residents, and damage to about 180 homes; on June 6, 2025, the Kristall oil depot was attacked.
