The 6th Separate Motorized Rifle (Cossack) Regiment named after M.I. Platov grew out of a Donbas armed formation from 2014-2015 and participated in the battles for the Lysychansk-Sievierodonetsk agglomeration in 2022, and after integration into the Russian Armed Forces in 2023, it was transformed into the 6th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 3rd Guards Army.

The formation traces its origins to the "militia" detachments of the Lysychansk-Sievierodonetsk agglomeration and Stakhanov under the command of Pavel Dryomov; on January 9, 2015, it was renamed the 6th Separate Motorized Rifle (Cossack) Regiment named after M.I. Platov of the LPR People's Militia. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the regiment fought for the Lysychansk-Sievierodonetsk agglomeration jointly with the 4th, 7th brigades and the 208th Cossack Regiment of the LPR People's Militia, advancing from the Popasna direction. From January 1, 2023, units of the LPR People's Militia were included in the Russian Armed Forces, and the regiment was transformed into the 6th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Lysychansk Cossack Brigade named after M.I. Platov as part of the 3rd Guards Combined Arms Army.
