The 201st Guards Military Base (military unit 01162) was formed in 2004 based on the 201st Gatchina Twice Red Banner Motorized Rifle Division, withdrawn from Afghanistan to the Tajik SSR in February 1989. The base ensures Russian military presence in Central Asia and supports the southern borders of the CSTO; for contract servicemen, one year of service in Tajikistan counts as three years of service in Russia, with double pay.
