The 18th Machine Gun Artillery ("Kuril") Division is a unique, one-of-a-kind coastal defense formation of the Kuril Islands, formed in 1978 and having survived all military reforms. According to InformNapalm, its servicemen were identified among participants in the invasion of Ukraine, despite its formal task of defending the Kurils.

The 18th Machine Gun Artillery Division (military unit 05812) was formed in 1978 on the basis of the 129th Training Motorized Rifle Division and redeployed to the Kuril Islands; it is the only machine gun artillery formation of the Russian Armed Forces and the only Ground Forces division not disbanded during the Serdyukov reform. It includes the 46th and 49th Machine Gun Artillery Regiments (Kunashir and Iturup). According to an InformNapalm investigation ("Guests from Sakhalin"), servicemen of the 18th MGAD were recorded as part of the invasion force in Ukraine.
