The 5th Guards Combined Arms Red Banner, Order of Zhukov Army (headquarters – Ussuriysk, Eastern Military District) was successively led in 2022–2025 by Major General Pyotr Bolgarev (August 2022 – April 2024), Major General Ivan Yeruslanov (April 2024–2025), and Lieutenant General Alexander Tokarev (2025, until November). The army operates as part of the "Vostok" (East) troop grouping in the South Donetsk direction (Vuhledar, Velyka Novosilka, Kurakhove); Tokarev was awarded the title Hero of Russia on December 17, 2025, for decisions that contributed to the liberation of the settlement of Shevchenko in the DPR.

Involvement in crimes / areas of activity
The army participates in the Special Military Operation as part of the "Vostok" (East) troop grouping on the South Donetsk front direction: Vuhledar direction (2022–2024), Velyka Novosilka (2023–2025), southern sector of the Kurakhove direction (2024–2025). Lieutenant General Alexander Tokarev, who commanded the army in 2025, previously served as chief of staff of the 41st Combined Arms Army; on December 17, 2025, he was awarded the title Hero of Russia with a citation related to the liberation of the settlement of Shevchenko in the DPR.
