The 36th Guards Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (Military Unit 06705) from Borzya is a Transbaikal brigade of the 29th Army, which suffered one of the most massive documented losses among motorized rifle units in the Special Military Operation: a HIMARS strike on a training ground near Volnovakha in February 2024 claimed the lives of dozens of its servicemen. The discrepancy between official and independent estimates of the number of dead (4 versus 60–68) became the subject of separate journalistic investigations.
On February 20, 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a HIMARS MLRS strike on a training ground near the village of Trudove (Volnovakha district, DPR), where servicemen from three companies of the 36th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade (200–300 people) were located, awaiting the arrival of the 29th Army commander, Major General Oleg Moiseev. The publication 'Vazhnye Istorii' (Important Stories) verified a list of 68 deceased servicemen of the brigade; according to BBC data, at least 60 people died. The Transbaikal authorities initially acknowledged the death of only 4 people, and the regional governor called the data on 65 deceased mobilized personnel 'unreliable'. The brigade was also reported to have liberated a settlement on August 29, 2024.
