The 1st Separate Guards Motorized Rifle 'Slavyanskaya' Brigade originated from Igor Girkin's militia, which defended Sloviansk in 2014, and since 2015 has been part of the security structures of the self-proclaimed DPR. In February 2022, the brigade was the first to enter the Volnovakha district, later participating in the assault on Avdiivka; a known incident involved the death of ten of its servicemen from friendly artillery fire.

The brigade traces its history back to Igor Girkin's armed formation, which defended Sloviansk in spring-summer 2014; in 2015, it participated in battles for Donetsk Airport alongside the 'Sparta' battalion. On February 24, 2022, the first day of the full-scale invasion, the brigade occupied Bohdanivka, Mykolaivka, and Novohnativka in the Volnovakha district. In late 2022, it participated in the capture of Opytne west of Donetsk and the start of the assault on Avdiivka; in the second half of 2022, it was reinforced with mobilized personnel from Irkutsk Oblast (1439th Regiment) who received about a month of training.
