The 110th (formerly 100th, "Sotka") Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade grew out of the DPR Republican Guard and fought on the western outskirts of Donetsk since 2015. In January 2017, its battalion commander Ivan Balakai was killed in battles near Avdiivka, and the battalion lost up to a third of its personnel killed and wounded.

The formation was established in 2015 by decree of DPR head Alexander Zakharchenko based on the Republican Guard, initially as the 100th Separate Detachment "Kupol" (which received the nickname "Sotka"). The brigade participated in battles on the western outskirts of Donetsk — from Marinka to Pisky. In 2020, it was awarded the title "Guards"; in 2022, the formation was renamed from the 100th to the 110th brigade and formally included in the Russian Armed Forces and the 51st Army.
