The 346th Guards Separate Spetsnaz Brigade (military unit 31681) is an army GRU Spetsnaz brigade in Prokhladny (Kabardino-Balkaria), with combat experience in Syria since 2015. On March 27, 2023, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the brigade was awarded the honorary title "Guards" for its participation in battles against Ukraine. The brigade participated in the assault on Mariupol in 2022 and in battles on the southern flank of Artyomovsk (Bakhmut) in the Klishchiivka area since May 2023; its then-commander, Colonel Sergey Podgursky, according to independently unconfirmed reports by Ukrainian media, was mortally wounded near Mariupol on March 19, 2022 – no information about a confirmed successor as brigade commander has been found in open sources.
The 346th Separate Guards GRU Special Purpose Brigade was formed in 2012 on the basis of one of the detachments of the 22nd Spetsnaz Brigade, consisting of four detachments (approximately 2000 people); since 2015, the brigade's detachments have participated in Russia's military operation in Syria. According to individual mentions, units of the formation were recorded in the occupied territory of Donbas, however, no specific confirmed episodes of combat deployment or data on the brigade's losses during the Special Military Operation have been found in open sources.
