The 53rd Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade (20th Guards Army of the Western Military District), re-equipped with 'Buk-M1' and then 'Buk-M3' systems, gained tragic notoriety in connection with the MH17 disaster: journalistic investigations established that in June 2014, the brigade transported a 'Buk' launch system with tail number 332 across Russian territory to the Ukrainian border, which on July 17, 2014, from the area of Snizhne in the occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast, shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, a Boeing 777 passenger aircraft – all 298 people on board died. The brigade and its then-commanders (Alexey Zolotov – 2011–2013, Sergey Muchkaev – since 2013) are under sanctions by the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, and Ukraine.
