The 55th Separate Helicopter Regiment (military unit 35666) is based in Korenovsk and is part of the 4th Air Force and Air Defense Army. The unit gained notoriety after the Kerch Strait incident in 2018, when its helicopters attacked Ukrainian boats, and in May 2023, it was awarded the Guards title.
The 55th Separate Guards Sevastopol Order of Kutuzov Helicopter Regiment traces its history back to the 807th Assault Aviation Regiment (1942) and was part of the 230th Assault Aviation Division throughout the war. From 1979 to 1988, over 150 servicemen of the regiment passed through Afghanistan. In 1992, the unit was withdrawn from Poland to Korenovsk airfield. In November 2018, the regiment's crews gained widespread notoriety in connection with the Kerch Strait incident: the regiment's combat helicopters attacked Ukrainian military boats in the neutral waters of the Black Sea. On May 9, 2023, the regiment was awarded the honorary title "Guards."
