The 61st Separate Guards Kirkenes Red Banner Naval Infantry Brigade of the Northern Fleet is considered one of the most prepared and combat-ready units of the Russian naval infantry. The brigade participated in the offensive on Kyiv in 2022: according to an assessment by the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) analytical group, by April 2022, confirmed losses were recorded for all Russian naval infantry brigades involved in the war without exception, including the 61st. Subsequently, units of the brigade were observed being redeployed to Donetsk Oblast. In 2025, the brigade operated in the Kherson direction, and according to the Russian Ministry of Defense on January 30, 2026, it operated in the Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmiisk) direction as part of the 'Center' group.
