The 106th Surface Ship Brigade of the Caspian Flotilla (Makhachkala/Kaspiysk) is one of the carriers of Kalibr missiles, which Russia uses to strike Ukraine from the Caspian Sea, despite the distance of thousands of kilometers from the front line. In 2024, Ukrainian long-range UAVs retaliated by attacking the flotilla's infrastructure in Kaspiysk.

The 106th Surface Ship Brigade is part of the Caspian Flotilla, whose small missile ships and corvettes (Project 21631 Buyan-M, etc.) became some of the carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles used for strikes on Ukrainian territory since 2022 – despite the Caspian Sea's remoteness from the front line. One confirmed episode is a Kalibr strike on a fuel and lubricants depot of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kostiantynivka area of Mykolaiv Oblast (according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, March). In response, Ukrainian forces on November 6 and 30, 2024, launched long-range UAV strikes on the flotilla's ships and infrastructure in Kaspiysk – at a distance of about 1500 km from the front line.
