The army aviation formation (Mi-8 helicopters) was created on December 1, 2011, as the 48th Air Base in Troitsk, relocated to Travyany airfield in 2012, and reorganized into the 17th Army Aviation Brigade on December 1, 2018. On July 11, 2022, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the brigade was awarded the honorary title "Guards" — the wording of the decree directly links the award to "heroism shown during the military operation on the territory of Ukraine," meaning the Ministry of Defense officially confirmed the brigade's participation in combat operations against Ukraine starting in 2022.
