The 12th Separate Guards Engineer Brigade (Alkino-2, Bashkortostan) was responsible for constructing crossings for advancing Russian troops and lost two commanders in succession: Colonel Sergey Porokhnya died in March 2022 near Izium, and his successor, Colonel Denis Kozlov, died in May 2022 during a failed attempt to cross the Siverskyi Donets near Bilohorivka, which became one of the symbols of the invasion's early failures.

The 12th Separate Guards Königsberg-Gorodok Red Banner, Order of Zhukov Engineer Brigade (military unit 63494) traces its history back to the 5th Special Purpose Engineer Brigade of the Red Army (1942). The brigade took an active part in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, providing pontoon crossings for advancing troops, and lost two of its commanders in succession during combat operations: on March 14, 2022, Colonel Sergey Porokhnya died under mortar fire in the Izium area while constructing a crossing over the Siverskyi Donets; his successor, Guards Colonel Denis Kozlov, died on May 11, 2022, during an attempt to construct a new pontoon crossing over the same Siverskyi Donets near the village of Bilohorivka (Luhansk Oblast) — during the failed river crossing, Russian forces lost, according to Ukrainian data, more than 70 units of armored vehicles and crossing equipment.
