The 90th Guards Tank Division (military unit 86274, Chebarkul) is one of the few Russian formations whose former commander, Ramil Ibatullin, was sanctioned by the EU specifically for war crimes committed by his subordinates (sexual violence near Kyiv), and not just for general command. The division's path ranged from an unsuccessful offensive on Kyiv via Brovary in 2022 to heavy positional battles for Avdiivka in 2023–2024.

Battalion tactical groups of the 6th and 239th Tank Regiments of the division operated in the Brovary district of Kyiv Oblast in spring 2022; after suffering losses there and the death of the commander of the 6th Tank Regiment, Colonel A. Zakharov, they were forced to retreat and go on the defensive. According to Russian-language Wikipedia, units of the division entrenched in Bohdanivka (Brovary district) are implicated in murders and sexual violence against local residents — specifically, two servicemen of the 6th Tank Regiment have been accused of raping a pregnant woman in March 2022, resulting in her losing the child. In 2023–2024, the 6th, 80th, and 239th Tank Regiments of the division participated in the battles for Avdiivka, incurring losses, according to Forbes' assessment, comparable to the destruction of an entire division.
