
Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, former Minister of Defense (2012–2024)
Sergey Kuzhugetovich Shoigu is the Secretary of Russia's Security Council since May 2024, having previously served as Minister of Defense from 2012 to 2024. Born in Chadan, Tuva, he is of Tuvan ethnicity. He graduated from Krasnoyarsk Polytechnic Institute and worked as a construction engineer.
Shoigu has spent over 30 years in the highest echelons of Russian power, becoming a minister in 1991. His career includes roles as Minister for Emergency Situations (1994–2012), Governor of Moscow Oblast (briefly in 2012), and Minister of Defense (2012–2024).
In May 2024, President Putin removed him from the defense minister post and appointed him Secretary of the Security Council. He was awarded the Hero of Russia title in 1999 and promoted to Army General in 2003. A founding member of the 'United Russia' party, Shoigu is a close associate of Putin from the siloviki circle.
He oversaw the invasion of Ukraine starting in 2022 and is currently under international sanctions for his role in military aggression.
