Case summary
Sergey Yevgenyevich Naryshkin has been the Director of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) since September 2016 and is one of Vladimir Putin's closest associates. Born in Leningrad, he graduated from the Leningrad Mechanical Institute in 1978.
In the 1980s, he studied at the KGB University alongside Putin and served as First Secretary at the USSR Embassy in Belgium from 1982 to 1991. He held positions as Chairman of the State Duma (2011–2016) and Head of the Presidential Administration (2008–2011). Naryshkin leads Russia's foreign intelligence, which is responsible for political espionage abroad.
He is currently under sanctions from the EU, USA, UK, and Canada for his role in Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
