The publisher calls the book a practical guide for commanders and highlights topics such as reconnaissance, fire engagement, drones, electronic warfare, camouflage, medicine, and consolidating positions.
This information confidently establishes the existence, date, and stated purpose of the publication. It does not answer questions about its print run, distribution channels, use in training centers, or mandatory application for specific units.
This is a Manual, Not a Combat Regulation
On the publisher's page, the book is explicitly called a practical guide that 'supplements combat regulations.' Consequently, it is not a published order from the Russian Ministry of Defense and does not replace an official regulation. The wording is important: authors can generalize experience and propose solutions, but commanders are not obligated to apply every scheme simply because it is printed.
Therefore, the previous headline about a 'crisis of doctrine' was stronger than the evidence. The seventh re-edition demonstrates an intensive search and rapid adaptation of professional literature; a crisis of official doctrine would require an analysis of current regulations, orders, training programs, and unit practices.
What the Book Reflects on the Real Battlefield
The list of topics aligns with changes that independent researchers observed in 2023–2025. RUSI described assault groups supported simultaneously by reconnaissance drones, reserve observation platforms, and direct support UAVs. US Army University Press noted the formalization of FPV drone operator training, the creation of specialized units, and the growing role of drones in isolating strongpoints.
This alignment makes the manual a valuable source regarding the language and priorities within the Russian military-professional environment. It shows which functions the authors aim to integrate around an assault unit: reconnaissance, fire, communications, electronic warfare (EW), engineering support, evacuation, and consolidation.
However, the thematic alignment does not mean the book caused these changes. Rather, it records and systematizes experience that had already emerged organically within units and was then partially formalized from above.
Model Complexity — The Main Organizational Risk
A modern assault scheme requires more than just infantry. It needs operators of reconnaissance and strike drones, EW specialists, stable communication channels, fire support teams, engineers, medics, and a commander capable of synthesizing their data into a single decision.
Each new element expands capabilities but simultaneously creates a point of failure. Loss of a video feed, frequency conflicts, untimely fire, lack of evacuation, or unprepared reinforcements can disrupt the entire sequence. Therefore, the quality of the model is determined not by the number of groups on a diagram, but by the resilience of their interaction.
Centralization and Bottom-Up Initiative
Russia's adaptation of drones long evolved through volunteers, commercial procurements, and the initiative of specific units. Later, the Ministry of Defense began establishing specialized centers, regiments, and a new branch of unmanned systems troops. Such institutionalization helps standardize training and supply.
At the same time, ISW warned that excessive centralization could weaken flexibility if the best operators and resources are withdrawn from line units or if decisions are pushed too high up the chain of command. The seventh edition is useful to read against the backdrop of this contradiction: a mass army needs standards, but the battlefield demands rapid local adaptations.
How to Prove Real-World Implementation
The first level of evidence is the text itself: it confirms that the authors recommend a specific structure or procedure. The second is training: curricula of training centers, instructor materials, and recurring exercises show that the approach is being taught. The third is supply and staffing: the presence of positions, equipment, and procurements enables its application. The fourth is practice: several independently confirmed episodes demonstrate consistent use.
Only a combination of these levels allows one to speak of implementation. A video of a single demonstration exercise or a successful attack proves possibility, but not prevalence. A complaint from one serviceman proves a problem in a specific location, but does not characterize the entire army.
Why Seven Editions is an Ambiguous Signal
Frequent updates can be a sign of effective learning: authors revise the text in response to changing threats. It also indicates the short lifespan of tactical solutions. New frequencies, targeting methods, detection, and protection means change practice faster than a large organization can update its staff and training.
The edition number cannot measure the quality of an army. It speaks to the pace of editorial work and the demand for systematization, but says nothing in itself about the proportion of units equipped with the personnel and equipment for the described model.

The seventh edition is a useful primary source on how Russian authors conceptualize assault operations in a transparent battlefield environment. It confirms attention to drones, EW, dispersion, fire cooperation, and support.
