The 44th Separate Aviation Regiment of Special Purpose was formed on December 1, 2021, specifically as a carrier of the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missile system on MiG-31K interceptor fighters (up to 24 aircraft as standard). The regiment regularly launches Kinzhals at Ukrainian territory, including Kyiv and western regions (for example, a massive strike on April 11, 2024, involving 4 aircraft that took off from Savasleyka). In May 2024, the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine identified 29 command, flight, and technical personnel of the regiment, as well as 7 technical officers, establishing the tail numbers of the aircraft (RF-20862, RF-03230, RF-20882, and others).
