Patriarch Kirill (born Vladimir Mikhailovich Gundyaev) has served as Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Head of the Russian Orthodox Church, since 2009. He was born on November 20, 1946, in Leningrad into a family of an Orthodox priest.
Before his election as patriarch, he served as Archbishop (later Metropolitan) of Smolensk and Kaliningrad and headed the Department for External Church Relations of the ROC.
