Aleksey Gromov has served as First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation since May 21, 2012, overseeing state television and domestic media censorship. According to journalistic investigations, he issues directives to federal TV channels on what to cover and how, and oversees the presidential press pool.
Gromov also initiated the creation of the Russia Today television channel and sits on the Board of Directors of Channel One. The United States placed him on its sanctions list back in 2014 for destabilizing Ukraine, and in April 2021 expanded the justification to include managing the Kremlin's media apparatus to interfere in elections.
Similar sanctions were imposed between 2014 and 2022 by the EU, the United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, and Ukraine. Thus, for over a decade, Gromov has been responsible for shaping the unified propaganda narrative of Russian television, including the coverage of the war against Ukraine.
